Safeguard Your Floors

Place doormats inside and outside of every door that leads outside or into the garage. Use coarse coir mats outside to trap mud and grit, and cotton indoors to absorb water.

Institute a no shoes policy. Shoes track in all kinds of grime and abrade hard surfaces. Add years to the life of your floor by asking all household members to remove their shoes before entering the house.

To prevent scratches, attach self-adhesive felt pads to the bottoms of furniture legs and always lift, rather than a drag or roll, furniture when moving it.

To protect carpets from dents, support heavy furniture on plastic or rubber floor protectors that are at least an inch in diameter. The heavier the piece of furniture, the larger the floor protector should be.
